County Gate, Exmoor National Park

County Gate, Exmoor National Park is one of my favourite places because it has such wonderful views in all directions whether seaward or across the Exmoor National Park itself.

Something I always appreciate is that the parking (as at the time of writing this) is free. Gorgeous views, walks over undulating landscape to die for and free parking. Then drop down to Lynmouth and Lynton in Devon for a stroll by the river and sea ... Wonderful :-)

Porlock humour, tourism and goodwill in Exmoor and West Somerset

Here is a great piece of humour seen at a UK West Country harbour called Porlock Weir in West Somerset.

The writing on the side says "TROTTERS INDEPENDENT TRADING CO - NEW YORK, PARIS, PORLOCK". I loved it!

(The notice attached to the inside of the window gives details of the worthy cause being supported.)

The car with its flat tyre (not the cause) made me smile :-)

Horner, Exmoor - trees in winter with tangled branches echoing life's twists and turns by Rob Hopcott

I was admiring the work of CES over at her blog CES and her dishes part two. She has some lovely pictures of trees in winter.

I mentioned that near to where I live, there are some fantastic trees on top of a hill with wonderfully tangled branches which, to me, are a metaphor for all life's twists and turns.

CES suggested I put a photo up of these branches so here they are. The location is on the hill above Horner in West Somerset, UK around the junction of Cats Scramble and Granny's Ride.

I have a lot more great photos of Cats Scramble and Granny Ride and will post them soon.

Porlock Weir on a Sunny September Saturday - walking, strolling and just plain ambling along

If you are looking for things to do in West Somerset or Exmoor on a warm sunny Saturday September afternoon, a walk or stroll around Porlock Weir is one of my favourite entertainment activities.

Porlock town or village can be found just a few miles to the West of Minehead. Porlock Weir can be found just past West Porlock along the westerly coast road.

Nearby, there is access to the Worthy Hill Toll Road (for those keen to avoid the infamously steep Porlock Hill).

There's a handy car park (pay and display), a pub, a restaurant, hotel accommodation and all the pleasures of a really old fashioned olde worlde harbour.

Sauntering around Porlock Weir harbour is great, or along the westerly shingle to Gore Point, but, for me, the best relaxation is to nip up onto the South West Coast path which runs along behind Porlock Weir alongside the lush green Exmoor fields and towards Culbone.

On a sunny day with the lambs leaping in the fields and the smell of the heather coming off the moorland at the top of Porlock Hill, there is no nicer place to be for a Happy Hopcott.

September is a time for nature to produce loads of juicy blackberries in West Somerset. Yum! Happy Hopcott likes a nice blackberry! (Hey check out a great and poignant short story called Blackberry jam by Donna Teller)

Follow this path westerly and you will come to Worthy Combe and the start of the Worthy Hill Toll Road (see above). There is also a lovely path to Culbone Church.
It's quite a climb and not for me this afternoon so I turn back towards Porlock Weir and my camper van.

Back at Porlock Weir I walked along besides the business units letting to a range of small businesses and wondered what it would be like to have a work place here. Not much passing trade but a great view of Porlock Harbour and the Bristol Channel.

Back at Porlock Weir car park, I was tempted to take a rest at the tables besides the sea and shingle beach looking over to Hurlstone Point,

The view over to Bossington Hill was alluring. I love walking across the shingle beach in this easterly direction. It's a fine walk.

But my two hours parking is almost finished so I resolve to record the walk to Bossington on another day and to return home to record my afternoon out at Porlock Weir for all to see.
