Horner, Exmoor - trees in winter with tangled branches echoing life's twists and turns by Rob Hopcott

I was admiring the work of CES over at her blog CES and her dishes part two. She has some lovely pictures of trees in winter.

I mentioned that near to where I live, there are some fantastic trees on top of a hill with wonderfully tangled branches which, to me, are a metaphor for all life's twists and turns.

CES suggested I put a photo up of these branches so here they are. The location is on the hill above Horner in West Somerset, UK around the junction of Cats Scramble and Granny's Ride.

I have a lot more great photos of Cats Scramble and Granny Ride and will post them soon.

Bye for now.

Oh my gosh. These are amazing. I have never seen trees like these. They look so mysterious, spiritual and since they don't leaf, quite miraculous. Thanks Rob. What a treat.

Hi CES

I'm glad you like the photos, lots more to come. Yes it is a mysterious spiritual place. I was there today and in the sun it was beautiful. In truth, I have never seen them in leaf but I must check them in the Summer. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a few leafs on and I wouldn't like to mislead :-) The trees will never straighten up, though.

It was wonderful to emerge from the dense forest of trees and then look out over the Horner Valley towards Dunkery Beacon and I'll put those photos up soon.

hi Rob! Thanks for your visit. You may be interested in 'The storytellers blog' on my side bar. I'm hopeless at links I'm afraid and have to rely on visiting grand-children.

Hi Monique, thanks for visiting.

I was walking in the woods above Porlock Weir last weekend and found more of these wonderfully twisted trees. From the leaves below, I think they must be oaks.

It's good to see you here Miladsa.

Horner is a lovely spot. At lunchtime to give myself a break from the writing, I like to go and watch the chickens and goats at the smallholdings down there.

It's wonderfully rejuvenating and refreshes me for the afternoon's work.

Gosh what unique branches. What kind of tree is this?

Rob Hopcott said...

I'm not an expert but I think they are probably oaks.

Aren't they wonderful, whatever they are!

I have always been drawn to winter trees, especially those gnarled and twisted by a lifetime of winds off the sea.

My daughter and I owned an Exmoor pony for many years who was the delight of our lives, but I have never been to Exmoor.

Your photographs are most lovely.
